Drawing inspiration from the Australian landscapes and natural environments around her, Kahlilla works across acrylic and watercolour, translating observations of Country into layered, atmospheric compositions. Her palette draws from the colours of Country, with ochres, greens, clay tones and soft natural hues recurring throughout her work.
A sense of texture and discovery runs through Kahlilla's work. Raised surfaces, granulated watercolour, layered washes, pattern and mark making create depth and movement, inviting the viewer into the work. Her compositions shift between the expansive and the intimate, encouraging the eye to move through the landscape as a whole while remaining attentive to the smaller details within it.
Across landscapes, abstract works and studies of Australian flora, Kahlilla explores the relationship between land, water, movement and living systems. Her floral works reflect an admiration for the resilience and beauty of native Australian plants, while her landscapes and abstract compositions capture the atmosphere, movement and changing forms of Country.
Through her practice, Kahlilla seeks to bring the presence of nature into the home. Her works offer spaces for contemplation and connection, inviting the viewer to pause, look closely and experience the natural world through colour, texture and form.
